The original War in the North, developed by Snowblind Studios, let players control a Dwarf, an Elf and a human ranger fighting through events that unfold alongside the main story of The Lord of the Rings. It stood out at release for letting up to three players tackle the campaign together online, or two players locally in split screen, a structure the Legacy Edition preserves.
Aspyr priced the remaster at 19.99 dollars, with a 10 percent launch discount running through August 24 on most storefronts. The company says the release focuses on optimized performance and updated controls rather than a full visual overhaul, aiming to preserve what fans of the original remembered while smoothing out technical rough edges from a game built for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 hardware.
The surprise nature of the launch has fueled discussion among action RPG fans who had assumed the license was dormant. Middle earth video game rights have been fragmented across multiple publishers in recent years, and standalone co-op titles set in Tolkien’s world have been rare since the original War in the North shipped in 2011.
