Meta Cuts 20% of Workforce, Shifts to AI Focus as Zuckerberg Admits Slowdown

By Rithe RoseJuly 20, 20262 Mins Read

Meta laid off 8,000 employees in May 2026, roughly 10% of its workforce, then shifted 7,000 workers into AI-focused roles in July. The company is cutting another 1,400 positions across Washington state starting July 22. In total, about 20% of Meta’s workforce faces layoffs or restructuring.

Zuckerberg’s Admission

At an internal town hall on July 2, Mark Zuckerberg told employees that AI development “hasn’t really accelerated in the way that we expected.” He acknowledged the reorganization was not as clean as planned and that bets on the new structure “haven’t come to fruition yet,” though he expects measurable progress within three to six months.

The gap between expectation and reality is stark. Meta spent billions on AI infrastructure and training, reorganized its workforce, and eliminated management layers. Yet the results feel modest compared to the investment and disruption.

Where the Cuts Hit

Layoffs targeted integrity, cybersecurity, and Reality Labs teams—not core AI work. Meta preserved AI infrastructure and monetization functions, signaling that even as it shrinks, the company remains committed to AI research and product integration.

The Broader Meaning

Meta’s struggles mirror a wider tech industry pattern: massive AI investments followed by sobering realizations that the payoff is slower or smaller than imagined. Every major tech company is now experimenting with AI at scale. The winners aren’t necessarily those who spend the most, but those who find product-market fit first.

Meta’s confession reveals an uncomfortable truth: throwing people and money at AI doesn’t guarantee breakthroughs.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)

Why is Meta cutting 20% of its workforce if it’s focused on AI?

Zuckerberg is eliminating roles he considers lower-value (support, compliance, middle management) to redeploy headcount and resources toward AI. It’s a bet that AI-focused teams produce more output per person than traditional roles.
