Motorola has quietly expanded its mid-range portfolio with the introduction of the Moto G87, a device that signals a noticeable shift in priorities for the companyâs long-running G-series. Known largely for balancing affordability with dependable performance, the lineup now appears to be leaning more heavily into camera capabilities, an area where it has historically been less competitive.

At the centre of the Moto G87 is a 200-megapixel primary camera, a specification that places it among a small group of devices in its segment attempting high-resolution imaging. The sensor is paired with optical image stabilisation and supports what Motorola describes as 2x lossless zoom. While not equivalent to dedicated optical zoom hardware, the feature is designed to retain detail at moderate distances without significant degradation.
Motorola is also highlighting its âUltra Pixelâ technology, which it says enhances light sensitivity up to 16 times, aiming to produce brighter and clearer images in challenging lighting conditions. Users are offered multiple focal length options, including 24mm, 35mm and 50mm perspectives, giving some flexibility in framing without relying entirely on digital zoom.
The rear camera system is supported by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens, while a 32-megapixel front-facing camera handles selfies. Software features such as Auto Smile Capture suggest a continued emphasis on casual photography and social media use rather than professional imaging.
Beyond the camera, the Moto G87 carries a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Motorola claims peak brightness can reach 5,000 nits, a figure that, if consistent in real-world use, would aid visibility under strong sunlight. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i.
Performance is handled by the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chipset, paired with up to 12GB of RAM. This configuration is positioned for routine multitasking and general smartphone use rather than intensive workloads. The device runs Android 16 out of the box.
Battery capacity stands at 5,200mAh with support for 30W wired charging. While sufficient for daily usage, the figure comes at a time when some competing devices are pushing higher capacities and faster charging speeds.
Durability appears to be another area of focus. The phone carries IP66, IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, alongside MIL-STD-810H certification. Motorola says the handset can withstand drops from up to 1.2 metres. Dual speakers are also included, with the company claiming a significant boost in output compared to its predecessor.
Motorola has not yet disclosed pricing for the Moto G87. The device is expected to reach markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America in the coming weeks. There is no confirmation regarding availability in India at this stage.

The launch suggests a gradual repositioning of the G-series, with imaging taking a more central role than in previous iterations. How that translates into everyday performance will likely determine how the device is received once it reaches consumers.
