National Shutdown Protests Planned Across US, Connecticut Rallies Friday

By Nadia KhanomJanuary 30, 20263 Mins Read

The national shutdown movement is set to stage protests across the United States on Friday, with confirmed demonstrations in Connecticut. Organizers are calling for a coordinated day of action involving no work, no school, and no shopping.

The protests are being organized in response to the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minnesota. Activists say the actions are meant to draw national attention to immigration enforcement practices and federal operations.

National Shutdown Protests in Connecticut and Nationwide

Connecticut demonstrators are planning organized gatherings in New Haven and New London as part of the national shutdown day of action. Organizers describe the effort as a mass protest designed to disrupt daily economic activity and amplify opposition to recent federal actions.

In New Haven, protesters are scheduled to gather at the New Haven Green at 1 p.m. The rally is being organized by local activist groups that have promoted the event through social media and community networks.

In New London, a separate demonstration is planned for 5 p.m. at the whale tail fountain on State Street. Organizers there have framed the protest as a solidarity action connected to events in Minnesota and other cities nationwide.

The national shutdown campaign urges participants to refrain from work, school attendance, and consumer spending for the day. Organizers say this form of protest is intended to apply economic pressure while remaining nonviolent and collective in nature.

The movement follows a similar protest held in Minnesota the previous week. That action reportedly involved temporary business closures and large outdoor demonstrations, despite severe winter weather conditions.

According to organizers, the protests are also meant to honor the lives of Renee Good, a mother of three killed on Jan. 7, and Alex Pretti, a Veterans Affairs intensive care nurse killed days later. Both deaths occurred during encounters with federal agents, according to publicly reported accounts.

Friday’s protests in Connecticut are expected to take place amid extremely cold conditions. Forecasts indicate sunny and dry weather, but with wind chills dropping well below zero during the morning hours.

Historical Context and Broader Movement

The national shutdown concept is rooted in the idea of a general strike. This form of protest has historical ties to labor movements that emerged in the 19th century.

One of the most cited examples occurred in France in 1968, when widespread walkouts by students and workers brought much of the country to a standstill. Since then, similar tactics have been referenced by various social and political movements.

Organizers of the current national shutdown say they are building on recent grassroots momentum. They point to growing participation from workers, students, and community groups across multiple states.

While demonstrations are planned in multiple cities, organizers have emphasized decentralized action. Local groups are determining protest locations, timing, and formats based on community conditions.

The national shutdown protests on Friday are expected to draw attention across Connecticut and the wider US. Organizers say the actions are focused on accountability, public awareness, and collective participation.
