Nintendo Switch 2 sold 5.82 million units in Q1 fiscal 2026, a remarkable debut for the console. The hardware sold 3.5 million units in four days at launch, then continued to clear shelves as gamers upgraded from the original Switch, which has now sold 153.1 million units across its entire lifespan.

The Switch 2 launch drove Nintendo’s net sales up 132% year over year to 572.3 billion yen. Net profit climbed 18.6% to 96.0 billion yen, though a 32.3 billion yen gain on investment securities sales helped the bottom line.
Mario Kart World Powers Software Attach
Mario Kart World, the launch title for Switch 2, sold 5.63 million units at launch. That kind of attach rate—five million game sales on five million console sales—shows players are investing in the new hardware immediately. Strong launch software is critical for a console cycle.
Nintendo forecast 15 million Switch 2 units sold in fiscal 2026 and 45 million software units. Those numbers assume the hardware shortage will end and the launch momentum will carry through 2026.
Legacy Switch Still Printing Money
The original Switch declined to 0.98 million units sold in Q1, down 55% year over year. But legacy software titles performed strongly, proving that the seven-year-old console still has life left. Nintendo’s software library drives continued sales.
The Installed Base Advantage
With 153 million Switch units in the wild, Nintendo has a massive software install base. Many Switch 2 buyers were existing Switch owners looking for the next generation, creating a natural upgrade cycle.
Nintendo’s Switch 2 debut numbers are strong, but the real test is whether year-round software releases keep players engaged beyond the launch window.
