The International Cricket Council has issued a firm warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board after Pakistan’s government announced that the national team would boycott its February 15 group-stage fixture against India at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in Colombo.
In a strongly worded statement, the International Cricket Council said it had taken note of the government’s position and was awaiting official communication from the PCB. But it made clear that any decision to play selectively would clash with the basic expectation of a global tournament, where all qualified teams compete under the same schedule.
The ICC said such a move would be “difficult to reconcile” with the premise of equal participation, and warned that stepping away from a scheduled match would raise serious concerns around the integrity of the competition.
It also underlined that its events are built on “sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness,” and suggested that a refusal to play would undermine the “spirit and sanctity” of the tournament.
The statement carried an unmistakable message about consequences. It noted that a boycott could lead to forfeiture, which would directly affect Pakistan’s points and standing in the group.
While stopping short of directly challenging the government’s directive, the ICC said it respects the role of governments in matters of national policy. At the same time, it argued that the decision would not serve the interests of the global game or the welfare of fans worldwide, including millions in Pakistan.
The ICC added that delivering a smooth tournament is a shared responsibility for all member boards, and said it expects the PCB to explore a mutually acceptable resolution that protects the interests of all stakeholders.
The episode has also heightened concerns about broader obligations tied to participation, with the ICC noting that clarity will be important given the wider ecosystem surrounding a major world event.
For now, the immediate focus remains on whether the PCB formally confirms the stance attributed to Pakistan’s government, and what steps follow to avoid a dispute that could leave lasting damage.
