Buckingham Palace confirmed Tuesday that Princess Eugenie has given birth to a baby girl in Portugal, her third child and first daughter.

The baby’s arrival was announced through the palace, which did not immediately release additional details such as the baby’s name or exact birth weight. Eugenie, 36, is a granddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank in a televised ceremony at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in October 2018. The couple’s first son, August, was born in February 2021, followed by their second son, Ernest, in May 2023. The new baby girl is the couple’s third child and their first daughter.

The birth took place in Portugal, where Eugenie and her family have spent time in recent years, though the palace did not specify further details about the location or circumstances of the delivery.

Eugenie has largely stepped back from formal royal duties over the years, working instead in the art world as a director at an art gallery, while still making occasional public appearances alongside the royal family for major state events and holidays.

The arrival adds to a growing younger generation within the extended royal family, most of whom live away from the immediate spotlight given to more senior royals such as the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children.

The announcement drew congratulatory messages from royal watchers and members of the public online, continuing a recent stretch of family milestones for the Windsor family. Buckingham Palace said further updates, including the baby’s name, would be shared by the family in the coming days, following the pattern set after the births of August and Ernest.
