Royal Challengers Bengaluru defended their IPL title on June 1, defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to become only the third franchise in the tournament’s history to win back-to-back championships.
Virat Kohli was named Player of the Final after scoring an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, including a 25-ball fifty that is now his fastest in IPL history. Kohli’s knock settled the chase when it looked like GT’s spinners might contain RCB in the middle overs. His innings pushed his career IPL run tally to 9,336, extending his own record as the highest scorer in the tournament’s history.
RCB’s maiden title came in 2025, ending 18 years of heartbreak for one of cricket’s most followed franchises. The 2026 victory puts them alongside Chennai Super Kings, who won back-to-back in 2010 and 2011, and Mumbai Indians, who repeated in 2019 and 2020. For RCB fans, both trophies arriving in consecutive seasons is a result that seemed almost unimaginable after years of near-misses and early exits.
Gujarat Titans, who finished the league stage as table-toppers, had enough firepower to make the final competitive. Shubman Gill led their batting through the tournament but could not replicate his league-stage form in the final against RCB’s bowling attack, which held GT to a total that Kohli and his partners chased down with overs to spare.
IPL 2026 featured several standout individual performances across the season. Sooryavanshi won multiple awards for his contributions to RCB’s campaign. Tim David, who had a strong season for RCB, faces a one-match suspension from next season’s opener after an ice-bag incident with an umpire in the final. India Women made their own sporting headlines this month, with their record 209-run total against Netherlands at the Women’s T20 World Cup. The India men’s cricket schedule for the rest of 2026 is available on the BCCI official website. Ghana’s 1-0 World Cup win over Panama was another major sporting result this week.
IPL 2027 scheduling is already under discussion, with the BCCI considering an earlier start date from around March 10 to avoid peak summer heat. RCB’s title defence, if and when it arrives, will be the story the entire tournament builds toward.
