Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at Unpacked in London on July 22, marking its most ambitious foldable yet. The device is wider and shorter than previous Fold models, bringing Samsung’s vision of a new form factor closer to mainstream.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,900 in the US and goes on sale August 5. Samsung also announced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, a larger variant, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8. The company is betting foldables are no longer experimental.
Design and Display Push the Category Forward
The Z Fold 8’s narrower aspect ratio makes it feel more like a regular phone when folded. Samsung widened the inner display to 8 inches, giving tablet-like room for multitasking. The outer display remains compact for one-handed use.
Samsung claims to have engineered out the crease through new materials and hinge design. The result is a display that feels smoother than previous generations, though visibility of a crease may persist depending on angle and lighting.
Pricing and Availability
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,900; the Ultra model costs $2,000. Samsung is offering up to $900 in trade-in credits on the Fold 7, which effectively drops entry price to $1,000 for early adopters. The phones launch August 5, with pre-orders beginning now.
Samsung promises seven years of software updates—a commitment that signals confidence in the category’s longevity. By comparison, iPhone owners get similar support.
Competition and Market Impact
Apple is expected to launch a foldable iPhone in late 2026, likely at a premium price. Samsung has a head start in folding technology and manufacturing scale. The Z Fold 8 sets a benchmark that Apple will need to match or exceed.
Foldables remain niche—high-priced luxury phones for early adopters. But shipment numbers are rising. If Samsung can drop prices to $1,200 by 2027, foldables could become mainstream.
Samsung has refined the foldable formula enough that mainstream consumers should now take the category seriously.
