Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 on July 22 at an Unpacked event in London. The event starts at 2 p.m. BST (9 a.m. EDT, 3 p.m. CEST) and will stream on Samsung’s YouTube channel and website.
The Fold 8 Ultra features a new hinge called Flex Titanium that promises to reduce the visible crease—a perennial complaint about Samsung’s foldables. The Z Fold 8 Wide adds a new form factor entirely: a 7.6-inch inner display in 4:3 aspect ratio that’s closer to a tablet than a phone.
The Crease Problem Gets Tackled
Samsung has been working on the crease since the original Galaxy Fold launched in 2019. Every iteration has reduced it slightly, but it’s never gone away entirely. The Flex Titanium hinge reportedly brings the fold line into alignment with Oppo’s Find N6—meaning Samsung is essentially matching the competition on this front.
The crease matters because it affects how the phone feels to hold and use. A visible crease means your fingers catch on it. A smoother fold means the phone actually acts like the tablet Samsung is trying to sell.
A New Form Factor
The Z Fold 8 Wide is the more radical move. A 4:3 inner screen ratio is narrower and squarer than previous Folds, making it look more like a compact tablet than a stretched phone. This targets people who want their foldable to double as a productivity device.
The Z Flip 8 is expected to be thinner and lighter, though specs haven’t leaked widely. Samsung is cutting weight where previous versions felt bulky.
Timing and Expectations
The Unpacked event will also show off new Galaxy Watches. Samsung is treating this as a proper product showcase, not just an incremental update. The company has had foldables in the market for five years now—they need this generation to feel genuinely new.
The real test won’t be the crease or the price. It will be whether the Z Fold 8 Wide actually finds customers who want a foldable tablet, or whether it remains a curiosity.
