Social Security Adds 14 Conditions to Fast-Track Disability List

By Rithe RoseAugust 12, 20262 Mins Read

The Social Security Administration said Tuesday it has added 14 health conditions to its compassionate allowances list, a program that fast tracks disability benefit approvals for people with the most serious diagnoses. The update brings the total number of qualifying conditions to 314.

Compassionate allowances let the agency approve disability claims quickly, often based on a diagnosis alone rather than the lengthy medical documentation typically required. The Social Security Administration says more than 1.2 million people have been approved for benefits through the program since it launched in 2008.

Most of the newly added conditions are rare genetic disorders, including Aicardi syndrome, Bohring-Opitz syndrome, Baraitser-Winter syndrome, Beare-Stevenson cutis gyrata syndrome, CASK-related gene disorders, Lafora disease, and both the neonatal and type 1 forms of adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency. Four cancers were also added to the list: hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, primary cardiac sarcoma, primary intracranial malignant melanoma, and uveal melanoma with metastases.

Many of the conditions are diagnosed in infancy or early childhood and carry a poor prognosis, which is part of why the agency prioritizes them for expedited handling. Families dealing with a new diagnosis of a condition like Aicardi syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that mostly affects girls, often face immediate and significant medical costs, making fast access to benefits especially important.

The Social Security Administration reviews and updates its compassionate allowances list periodically, drawing on input from medical and scientific experts, disability examiners and public comment through the Social Security Advisory Board. The agency has expanded the list steadily since 2008, when it launched with 50 conditions.

The agency has not announced when the next round of additions might come, though compassionate allowances updates have typically occurred every year or two since the program began.

The announcement comes as Social Security faces broader scrutiny over processing times and staffing levels for regular disability claims, which can take many months to resolve without the compassionate allowances fast track. Advocacy groups have welcomed the expansion while continuing to push the agency to add more conditions and speed up general claim processing across the board.
