Spotify surpasses 300 million subscribers for the first time

By Rithe RoseAugust 6, 20262 Mins Read

Spotify has crossed 300 million subscribers for the first time in its history, the company said, marking a milestone in the streaming service’s growth even as it continues raising prices.

The company’s total monthly active user base has also grown, reaching 777 million, up 12 percent year-over-year. Subscriber growth came in at 9 percent for the quarter, a notable pace given that Spotify has pushed through several rounds of price increases in recent years.

Spotify’s quarterly revenue reached 4.8 billion euros, or about $5.52 billion, up 14 percent from the same period last year. The company’s growth has been driven both by its expanding subscriber base and by a widening set of premium features aimed at deepening engagement among paying users.

Much of that expansion has centered on artificial intelligence. Spotify has rolled out personalized AI-generated podcasts, a desktop app with AI-powered question-and-answer and briefing features similar in spirit to Google’s NotebookLM, and an audiobook partnership with voice AI company ElevenLabs. Last month, the company also launched a ChatGPT-like conversational AI assistant built directly into the app.

The company has additionally struck deals with record labels to allow fan-generated remixes of licensed tracks, part of a broader push to let AI-based creative tools operate within licensed boundaries rather than outside them.

At the same time, Spotify has introduced artist verification badges as a way to help listeners distinguish human-made music from AI-generated tracks, amid a growing backlash against what critics have dubbed AI slop flooding music platforms. Independent tracking services such as SoullessMusic.com and SlopTracker have emerged specifically to monitor the volume of AI-generated music appearing on streaming platforms, according to reporting from 404 Media.

Spotify’s 300 million subscriber milestone comes as the broader music streaming industry grapples with how to balance AI-driven content growth against listener trust and artist compensation, an issue that is likely to keep shaping the platform’s product decisions in the months ahead.
