Subaru is recalling 541,237 vehicles across multiple model years due to an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) printed on the compliance label. The defect affects 2026 Crosstrek Hybrids, 2025-2026 Foresters and Forester Hybrids, and 2019-2026 Ascents.
The GAWR label specifies the maximum weight each axle can safely carry. An incorrect label means owners might not know their vehicle’s true weight limits, potentially leading to overloading and safety risks. Subaru will mail owners a corrected compliance label to apply or offer free installation at any dealer.
The timeline is slower than typical recalls. Subaru plans to send the first notification letter on August 25, alerting owners to the issue. A second letter will follow later when the remedy is available. Owners can call 1-844-373-6614 for more information.
Earlier Moonroof Recall
Subaru is also recalling 69,663 of the 2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid models for a different defect: moonroof panels that may detach while driving. The sliding glass panel of the powered moonroof assembly was improperly bonded to its frame on some vehicles. An estimated 2.9% of recalled units have the defect.
Notification letters for the moonroof issue are scheduled to mail July 24. Owners won’t be able to fix the problem immediately. Like the label recall, the remedy has a two-phase notification schedule.
Who’s Affected
The GAWR label recall touches three popular Subaru models. Forester owners make up the bulk of the recall, with both standard and hybrid versions included. Crosstrek Hybrid owners and Ascent owners spanning several model years are also affected.
Check your vehicle’s build date against the recall list. Not all vehicles of these model years are necessarily included. Subaru’s website has the full breakdown of affected VIN ranges.
Two recalls in one month suggests Subaru’s manufacturing quality checks need tightening, but neither defect appears to affect driving performance if the vehicle stays within proper weight limits.
