Tarique Rahman financial assistance cleaners initiative was announced on 15 March as an Eid gift for sanitation workers serving in Bangladesh’s 12 city corporations. Each registered cleaner will receive Tk 5,000 as part of the government’s pre-Eid support programme.

The announcement came during a meeting at the Parliament Secretariat in Dhaka where cheques were handed over to city corporation administrators. The financial assistance is intended to recognise the daily work of sanitation staff who maintain urban cleanliness across major cities.

Eid Gift Distributed Through City Corporation Administrations

The cheques were presented to administrators representing several city corporations, including Chattogram City Corporation. The distribution process is expected to take place through the respective local administrations so that payments reach the sanitation workers directly.

The programme took place at around 3:30pm and was attended by several senior government figures. Among those present were Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, and Sylhet City Corporation administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury.

Officials present at the event described the initiative as a gesture of appreciation toward municipal workers whose responsibilities intensify during busy festive periods. City corporations rely on thousands of cleaners who manage waste collection, road sweeping, and sanitation services throughout the year.

Sanitation workers are widely considered a backbone of city maintenance. Their work often begins before sunrise and continues through long shifts in crowded urban environments. Municipal authorities say their efforts help keep streets usable and reduce public health risks.

Government Message Of Recognition For Sanitation Workers

According to officials involved in the programme, the financial support is meant to provide small but meaningful relief to families ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. The payment is intended as a one-time festive allowance rather than part of the regular wage structure.

Government representatives said the decision reflects an effort to recognise labour that often remains unnoticed despite its importance to everyday urban life. Cleaners working under city corporations frequently perform physically demanding duties in difficult conditions.

The assistance is also expected to support workers’ households during the Eid season, when spending typically increases due to family gatherings and religious celebrations. Municipal administrators will coordinate the distribution once funds are transferred to the respective city authorities.

The Tarique Rahman financial assistance cleaners programme highlights the role of sanitation workers in keeping Bangladesh’s cities functioning. With Eid approaching, the one-time payment is intended to offer recognition and limited financial relief to thousands of municipal cleaners across the country.
