Tesla began mailing recall letters on June 20 for a brake component issue on certain Cybertruck vehicles, the eighth recall issued for the electric pickup since it launched in November 2023. The recall covers front and rear brake rotors, wheel hubs, and lug nuts. Tesla has confirmed that replacement parts will be provided and fitted at no charge to affected owners.
The Cybertruck’s recall history is one of the longer ones in recent automotive memory for a vehicle at this stage of its production lifecycle. Earlier recalls covered an accelerator pedal that could become stuck, a body trim piece that could detach at speed, windshield wiper problems, and several other component issues. The brake component defect in this latest recall relates to how certain front and rear rotors and hubs were manufactured and fitted at the factory.
Tesla has not yet disclosed how many vehicles are covered. Owner notification letters began going out June 20, and the NHTSA filing is expected to be publicly accessible in the regulator’s recall database. Cybertruck owners can check whether their vehicle is included by entering the VIN number through the NHTSA website or via the Tesla mobile app’s service notification section.
Brake system defects sit at the more serious end of the recall category scale. NHTSA classifies recalls involving braking components as requiring prompt attention, and Tesla’s service operation is expected to prioritise appointments for affected owners. Tesla’s mobile service team handles many recall repairs at the owner’s home or workplace rather than requiring a service centre visit.
The Cybertruck’s recall count is notably higher than comparable electric vehicles at a similar production stage. The vehicle’s unconventional design choices — large structural castings, stainless steel body panels, a manufacturing process unlike anything Tesla had built before — created quality control challenges the company has been working through since launch.
Production of the Cybertruck has continued despite the recall history. Waiting times for some configurations remain several months long, suggesting demand has not been meaningfully affected by the vehicle’s reported issues.
Affected owners should check their recall status through the NHTSA recall database. More on Tesla vehicle updates and EV industry news is in our tech section.
