World Artificial Intelligence Conference Concludes in Shanghai with Xi Jinping Keynote

By Rithe RoseJuly 23, 20262 Mins Read

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference concluded on July 20, 2026, in Shanghai after four days of keynotes, exhibitions, and competitions. Xi Jinping delivered his first-ever keynote at the event, signaling China’s commitment to AI development at the highest political level.

The conference attracted over 1,100 companies exhibiting more than 3,000 products and technologies. Three hundred products made their global debuts. The exhibition covered 100,000 square meters—the largest in WAIC history.

The Geopolitical Moment

Xi Jinping’s keynote address was the headline. The Chinese leader rarely appears at technology conferences. His presence signals that AI is now a matter of state strategy for China, not just corporate strategy.

The conference also launched the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, signed by 29 countries, including 11 members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization: Belarus, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This is China’s alternative to Western-led AI governance frameworks.

What Was on Display

Chinese companies showcased robotics, generative AI, chip designs, and industrial applications. The exhibition reflected China’s AI strategy: not just building models, but embedding AI into manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and finance.

International companies like NVIDIA also exhibited, but the conference had a decidedly Chinese character. The goal was to demonstrate that China’s AI ecosystem rivals the West in breadth and maturity.

What This Means Globally

Western AI governance discussions often exclude China or position China as a competitor to contain. WAIC and the new cooperation organization signal that China is building its own governance framework, independent of the West.

This creates two parallel AI worlds: one led by the US and Europe, one led by China. Companies will increasingly have to navigate both ecosystems. Governments will have to compete on AI development without unified rules.

The World AI Conference was not just a trade show. It was China announcing that the global AI competition is now fully underway, with stakes that go beyond software and chips.
