BMW unveiled the 2027 X5 and X5M with a redesigned exterior featuring new double-X headlights, winged door handles, and the Neue Klasse design language. The lineup includes five powertrain options: two ICE models with 48V mild hybrid technology, a plug-in hybrid, the first all-electric iX5 with 435 miles of range, and eventually a hydrogen-powered iX5. Base price for the X5 40 starts at $69,800, with the rear-wheel-drive 40 at $69,800 and the all-wheel-drive 40 xDrive at $72,100.
The redesign marks a significant departure from the outgoing generation. BMW dropped the split tailgate, replacing it with a single opening design. The interior gets a high-tech overhaul with a new infotainment system. The car doesn’t look revolutionary, but the changes are deliberate and thoughtful.
The Powertrain Lineup
The standard X5 40 and 40 xDrive pair a turbocharged inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assist, producing sufficient power for daily driving without hybrid complexity. The X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid at $77,500 offers electric range for short commutes. The all-electric iX5 60 xDrive at $79,800 is the headline—435 miles of EPA-estimated range, fast charging, and 800V technology for near-supercharger speeds.
A hydrogen-powered iX5 is coming later in 2027, but availability will be limited to select California markets where hydrogen infrastructure exists. It’s more experiment than volume product.
Design and Dynamics
The winged door handles are purely aesthetic—button-operated and functional, adding a tech-forward vibe. The new headlights are thinner and more aggressive. The proportions remain big and imposing. Nothing about the X5 screams subtlety.
Weight increases slightly due to new safety systems and options. The mild-hybrid models stay nimble enough for an SUV. The PHEV adds battery mass but keeps handling sharp for a two-ton vehicle. The electric iX5 is heavier, but immediate torque delivery compensates.
Timeline and Availability
The X5 40 xDrive rolls out in October 2026 to early buyers. The rear-wheel-drive 40, plug-in hybrid 50e xDrive, and electric iX5 60 xDrive begin sales in Q1 2027. Additional models, including the M Performance variant, follow later in 2027. Pricing may shift as production scales.
The 2027 X5 arrives October 2026 for early adopters. This is BMW betting that buyers still want luxury SUVs even as the world electrifies.
