Google is expanding Gemini Live with Guided Vision, a feature that can describe what an Android phone’s camera sees. The company says it was designed with blind and low-vision communities and can help with tasks such as reading fine print, understanding a menu in a dark restaurant or identifying an object at home.

Guided Vision is built around a live camera view rather than a single photograph. Google says the system can give spoken descriptions and provide feedback when the camera needs to be reframed, panned or centered on an object. That could make the feature more useful in changing surroundings, where a user may need help positioning the phone before asking for information.
Google is careful about the feature’s limits. Its Android announcement says Guided Vision can make mistakes and is not a medical device, mobility aid or replacement for safe-travel guidance. That warning is important because a camera description is an interpretation, not a guarantee that every object, label or hazard has been recognized correctly.
Users can reach the tool through accessibility shortcuts, TalkBack or Gemini app settings, according to Google. The company says the feature is coming to phones running Android 9 or newer in countries where Gemini is available. The rollout may not be identical across languages, accounts and devices, so a user will need to check local availability.
The feature reflects a shift in mobile AI from answering questions to helping a person interact with the physical world. It can be useful for everyday orientation, but the safest approach is to treat its description as an extra source of information. Users should verify important text, food labels, medication details and directions with a trusted person or official source.
Google’s announcement gives a clear picture of the intended use without claiming perfect vision or universal access. Guided Vision could make a phone more helpful in ordinary moments, especially when a user needs a quick description.
