Meta Cuts 8000 Jobs in AI Restructuring as Zuckerberg Acknowledges Mistakes

By Tarek HasanJune 18, 20263 Mins Read

Meta began laying off roughly 8,000 employees in May 2026, cutting about 10 percent of its total workforce as the company redirected resources toward artificial intelligence infrastructure and reduced headcount in divisions it considered lower priority.

The cuts — announced on May 20 — came on top of earlier rounds of job reductions that had affected Meta’s Reality Labs division, VR game studios and several cross-functional teams. In total, the company reduced its workforce by thousands of positions across multiple divisions in the first half of 2026 before the May round became the largest single layoff event.

Beyond the job cuts, Meta reassigned upward of 7,000 workers into newly created AI-focused teams, including groups called Applied AI Engineering, Agent Transformation Accelerator and Central Analytics. The message from leadership was consistent: the company’s future is in artificial intelligence, and everything else is secondary.

In an internal memo dated June 12, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that the restructuring had been poorly managed in places. “Given the complexity of these changes, we’ve made mistakes and will almost certainly make more,” he wrote, according to people familiar with the communication. Despite the admission, Zuckerberg ruled out further company-wide layoffs for the rest of 2026.

Meta is directing $115 billion to $135 billion toward AI infrastructure over the coming years, making this one of the largest capital commitments by any technology company in history. The investment covers data centers, custom chips and a suite of AI consumer products that Meta hopes will keep it competitive with OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.

The scale of the bet is significant even by Big Tech standards. Meta’s workforce reductions mirror a broader pattern across the industry as companies try to demonstrate to investors that AI spending will come at the expense of other costs rather than in addition to them.

The cuts follow moves by other major AI players. Apple’s Siri overhaul with Google Gemini showed how even the most resource-rich companies are choosing partnerships over pure internal builds. Meanwhile, SpaceX’s $60 billion Cursor acquisition illustrated how the AI coding market is attracting eye-watering valuations.

Meta’s headcount reduction leaves the company with roughly 75,000 employees — still one of the largest tech workforces in the world. OpenAI’s IPO filing has added fresh competitive pressure, with both companies now racing to dominate the consumer AI assistant market. Meta’s investor relations page carries the official financial guidance tied to the restructuring.

For the workers affected, the layoffs are the third major round of cuts at Meta since 2022. The company still maintains that this cycle is different — that AI justifies the pain in a way that earlier belt-tightening did not. That case will be tested as the products it is betting on reach consumers.
