Alex Eala opens play on Centre Court on Monday against 13th seed Jasmine Paolini, with a Wimbledon quarterfinal place on the line. The match began at 1:30pm London time, her first appearance in the second week of a Grand Slam.

Eala earned this stage the hard way. In the third round she knocked out Iga Swiatek, the reigning champion, 7-6 (11-9), 6-2. Paolini arrived with less drama, beating Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-2.
Why Eala is no easy draw for Paolini
The two have met once before, earlier this year in Dubai. Eala won that match. She converted four of eight break points and won 73 percent of her first-serve points, while Paolini managed 61 percent on hers.
The win over Swiatek was Eala’s seventh victory against a top-10 player at a major. She has kept beating bigger names all season, and Paolini said before the match that the 29th seed was a dangerous opponent on this kind of run.
What is at stake for Paolini
Paolini reached the Wimbledon final two years ago and has not been back to the last eight of a Grand Slam singles event since. A win on Monday changes that.
Her form this fortnight has been sharp. The 6-1, 6-2 win over Sakkari took little time, and her experience on the biggest courts is something Eala does not yet have. Centre Court on the second Monday is a different kind of stage.
A landmark day for Philippine tennis
Eala is the first Filipina to reach the fourth round of the singles draw at Wimbledon. Interest back home has surged, with broadcast searches spiking in the Philippines through Monday.
At 21, Eala has already broken most of the barriers that stood between Southeast Asian tennis and the top of the sport. A quarterfinal would break another one.
The winner moves into the last eight, with the quarterfinals to be played in the coming days.
