Alia Bhatt Alpha Opens to Rs 80 Crore Globally, YRF Spy Universe Underperforms

By Sadia Afrin JoyaJuly 23, 20262 Mins Read

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s spy thriller “Alpha” concluded its opening week with Rs 80.38 crore in gross worldwide collections, falling short of expectations for a Yash Raj Films spy universe flagship. The film released July 10, 2026, as the first female-led installment in YRF’s spy franchise.

Domestic collections reached Rs 48.55 crore net (Rs 57.28 crore gross) with Rs 23.10 crore coming from overseas markets. Industry observers noted the script failed to impress audiences despite strong pre-release hype.

The YRF Spy Universe Context

YRF built its spy universe around male-led blockbusters: “Pathaan” earned Rs 500+ crore globally, “War 2” matched it. “Alpha” was positioned as the universe’s female-led expansion, a chance to broaden the franchise’s appeal.

The underperformance raises questions about whether the universe itself was the draw, or whether specific stars and directorial voices drove prior successes.

Box Office Analysis

Day 1 domestic net collections stood at Rs 9.25 crore (Rs 11.10 crore gross), with Rs 5 crore from overseas, totaling Rs 16.10 crore globally. The trajectory flattened after opening weekend, suggesting weak word-of-mouth.

Shiv Rawail’s directorial approach, script choices, or casting may have contributed. The film’s reviews were mixed, with critics noting that expectations were high but execution fell short.

What’s Next

The underperformance doesn’t doom the franchise, but it signals caution. YRF will likely reassess what made the male-led spy films click before committing to more female-led installments.

For Alia Bhatt, the loss is notable but not career-defining. She has multiple projects in the pipeline, and one underperformer doesn’t diminish her standing as a lead actor.

The spy universe needed this installment to succeed to justify expansion. It didn’t. That changes YRF’s calculus for what comes next.
