Yash Raj Films’ Alpha launches the first female-led chapter of its Spy Universe on July 3, with Alia Bhatt and Sharvari as elite agents on a high-stakes mission. Bobby Deol plays the antagonist, while Anil Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan round out the ensemble.

Director Shiv Rawail helms the project, which marks YRF’s attempt to expand beyond the male-led spy films that built the franchise. Pathaan and War established the Spy Universe as a reliable earner. Alpha bets that audiences will follow the same action beats with a female lead.
YRF’s Spy Universe Strategy
Yash Raj Films has built a decade-long spy franchise around male actors. Pathaan and War grossed over a billion rupees each. Both followed a familiar formula: high-stakes international missions, romance subplots, impeccable production design, and stars audiences trusted.
Alpha applies the same logic with women leads. The studio is betting that spy narratives transcend gender, that audiences care about the action and the stakes more than the gender of the protagonist. The bet might be right. Or it might test the franchise’s depth.
The Cast and Production
Alia Bhatt carries most scenes. She’s a proven box office draw with a track record in action thrillers. Sharvari is less established but brings credibility to the ensemble. Bobby Deol as a rogue mentor figure ties the film to the spy universe’s moral ambiguity.
Anil Kapoor plays a senior intelligence official. Hrithik Roshan’s appearance as Major Kabir, reprising his War role, signals continuity with the franchise. These cameos remind audiences that Alpha exists in the same world.
July Release Timing
Alpha hits theaters at the start of July, when Indian audiences often break routines and catch films. The timing is intentional. YRF placed the film early to capture the holiday week before other major releases fragment the audience.
The film carries a substantial budget. YRF doesn’t make cheap spy thrillers. The production design, VFX, and locations cost money. Alpha needs to clear that hurdle before it can be considered successful.
Alpha asks whether Bollywood audiences will embrace female-led action thrillers. If the film connects, expect YRF to announce spin-offs immediately. If it stumbles, the Spy Universe shrinks back to male leads.
