CBS News reported that the pilot told air traffic controllers a cabin fire had started toward the back of the Airbus A321. The pilot said the aircraft had 133 people on board. Flight attendants used a thermal containment bag to contain the device before the plane reached the airport.
One passenger was treated and released after the landing, the airport said in a statement. The pilot reported that several passengers might have suffered burns, while a passenger interviewed by CBS described smoke filling the cabin and people trying to help with the laptop.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the flight landed at about 6:55 p.m. local time and that it was investigating. American Airlines said the plane landed safely after smoke was reported from a customer device and praised the crew for containing it quickly.
The Independent, citing Reuters, also reported that the fire involved a laptop battery. The FAA warns that lithium-ion batteries can experience thermal runaway when damaged, overheated, exposed to water, overcharged or improperly packed. The current investigation has not established why this particular device caught fire.
