Apple Watch Series 12 is adding a readiness score that turns recent activity, vital signs and sleep data into a daily guide. Apple says the score runs from 0 to 10 and comes with a plain-language recommendation: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. The feature is designed to help users decide how to approach a day or a training session.

The score is supported by a new Health Sensing System. Apple says Series 12 can measure heart rate every five seconds and capture heart rate variability as often as every five minutes. Recovery HRV is used for daily signals of stress and recovery, while overall HRV is intended to provide a broader view of cardiovascular health.
Readiness is not a diagnosis and it is not a promise that a workout will feel easy. Apple says the score updates during the day when new information arrives, such as a hard workout or a change in daytime vitals. Users can see which factors are influencing the result instead of receiving only a number without context.
Apple says the scoring algorithm was developed with data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study and in collaboration with exercise scientists and physicians. That gives the feature a research background, but individual users should still treat the result as guidance. Sleep quality, sensor fit, illness, alcohol, stress and training history can all affect how a wearable interprets a day.
The feature can be useful for people who want a quick way to balance training and recovery. Someone preparing for a race may welcome an early warning that recovery should take priority. Another user may simply use the score as a prompt to look at sleep or activity trends. The recommendation should not replace advice from a medical professional.
Apple Watch Series 12 is available to preorder, with availability beginning September 18, according to Apple. The readiness score is a new way for the watch to summarize data that users already collect. Its success will depend on whether the result feels understandable, consistent and helpful over time rather than becoming another number to check without a clear next step.
