BMW begins production of the 2027 i3 sedan in August 2026 at its Munich plant, marking the company’s transition toward all-electric manufacturing at its home factory.

First deliveries start in fall 2026. The i3 represents BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, a clean-sheet design built from the ground up for batteries and electric motors rather than adapted from existing combustion designs.
What’s New in the 2027 i3 Sedan
The i3 is a traditional midsize sedan with room for five and a proper trunk. It’s not a hatchback or crossover. The design feels upscale, with a long hood and sculpted sides.
Two versions launch first: the 50 xDrive (dual motor, all-wheel drive) and the 40 eDrive (single motor, rear-wheel drive) arriving a bit later. The 50 produces strong power delivery while the 40 prioritizes efficiency.
Range and Real-World Performance
BMW estimates 440 miles of range on a single charge for the 50 xDrive, pending EPA testing. That’s competitive with Tesla Model S and Mercedes EQE. Charging at a 250kW fast charger should add meaningful range in 20 minutes.
The Neue Klasse platform uses structural battery packs where the battery integrates with the chassis, saving weight and improving handling. The result is a BMW that drives like one, not like a software company’s car.
Munich’s EV-Only Future
This August start is symbolic. From 2027 onwards, the Munich plant builds battery-electric vehicles exclusively. No hybrids. No remaining ICE models. It marks BMW’s public commitment to discontinuing combustion cars at its flagship location.
The i3 Touring (estate version) joins the sedan lineup by July 2027 with similar powertrain options. Both models arrive in North America for the 2027 model year.
BMW’s August production start shows legacy automakers can pivot when they commit capital and talent to new platforms.
FYI (keeping you in the loop)
How much does the 2027 BMW i3 cost?
BMW hasn’t announced final US pricing yet, but expect the 40 eDrive to start around $55,000 and the 50 xDrive at $65,000+, once EPA testing concludes.
