OpenAI has again pushed back the release of ChatGPT’s planned “adult mode,” a feature the company had framed as a way for verified adult users to access erotica and other adult content.

The delay marks another setback for a product idea that had already slipped once before, leaving no clear timeline for when, or if, the feature will finally arrive.

Sam Altman first signaled the change in October, saying OpenAI would expand age-gating and allow “even more, like erotica for verified adults” as part of what he described as a principle of treating adult users like adults.

At the time, the plan was tied to December. That did not happen.

The launch was later moved into the first quarter of this year after priorities inside the company reportedly changed. According to the information provided, Altman sent an internal memo declaring a “code red” and directing teams to focus on the core ChatGPT experience instead.

An OpenAI spokesperson told Axios the company is “pushing out the launch of adult mode” so it can focus on work seen as more urgent for a broader share of users.

Those priorities, according to the spokesperson, include intelligence, personality, and making ChatGPT “more proactive.”

The wording matters. OpenAI is not walking away from the idea outright. The spokesperson said the company still believes in “the principle of treating adults like adults,” but added that getting the experience right will take more time.

That leaves the feature in a familiar position: publicly discussed, repeatedly delayed, and still undefined in practical terms.

For users who had expected the change to arrive months ago, the latest update offers little beyond reassurance that the idea remains alive inside the company. It does not say how the age checks would work in practice, when testing might begin, or what “adult mode” would actually look like once released.

For now, the only clear takeaway is that OpenAI has decided the feature can wait while it puts its energy into improving how ChatGPT performs for a much larger audience.

That may be a sensible product decision, but it also extends the uncertainty around one of the company’s most closely watched promises. Until OpenAI gives a firmer date, “adult mode” remains more of a stated intention than a product users can count on.
