The Formula 1 circus arrives at Silverstone this week for the British Grand Prix, a sprint format race weekend running July 2-5, with the main race on Sunday afternoon — and the championship picture heading into it is as tight as it’s been all season.

Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship after a difficult run for the Ferrari and Mercedes drivers in recent rounds. Lewis Hamilton, now in his second year with Ferrari, sits 40 points behind the Italian teenager with his home race to come. George Russell, who won in Austria last Sunday, is 46 behind the leader and climbing.
Hamilton at Home — and in a Different Car
Silverstone has been Lewis Hamilton’s most successful circuit. He has won there eight times across his career, more than any other driver at any circuit in modern Formula 1 history. He’s never won at Silverstone in red. That remains one of the few gaps on a résumé that has otherwise run out of space.
A win this weekend would close the gap on Antonelli to 15 points with many rounds still to go. A bad result could effectively end any title hopes before the summer break. Hamilton knows this circuit as well as anyone alive, and Ferrari have shown strong pace on power-limited tracks — Silverstone’s fast, sweeping layout should suit their current package.
Russell’s Momentum and the Sprint Format
George Russell won in Austria last weekend and moved to within six points of Hamilton in the championship. Two consecutive strong results could push him into genuine title contention rather than the third-place background role he’s occupied for most of 2026.
The sprint format adds complexity. There’s a Sprint race on Saturday July 4 alongside qualifying, which means teams have less practice data going into a one-session qualifying shoot-out on Friday. Mercedes have generally thrived in sprint weekends — the reduced practice time suits their methodical setup philosophy less, but their raw pace on fast circuits often carries them.
Antonelli’s Task and the British Crowd
Kimi Antonelli will be defending a 40-point lead at a circuit where he has never raced at the top level before. He’s shown this season that big-race pressure doesn’t visibly affect his pace. His performance in the Austrian GP — where he finished second to hold most of his lead despite Russell closing — showed maturity beyond his 19 years.
The crowd at Silverstone will be vocally behind the British drivers: Lando Norris in the McLaren, Russell and Hamilton for the two top teams, and Oliver Bearman as a wildcard to watch. Antonelli has been in front of hostile home crowds before this year. He’ll need to do it again.
Lights out at Silverstone is Sunday July 5 at 3pm BST — the championship fight arrives at one of the fastest and loudest circuits on the calendar.
