Forza Horizon 6 PS5 Brings Japan Into Focus With a More Expansive Open Road

By Tarek HasanMay 17, 20263 Mins Read

Even by the standards of the Horizon series, the latest entry feels less concerned with racing lines than with the simple act of driving. In “Forza Horizon 6,” the roads themselves often become the main attraction, stretching across a fictionalized version of Japan that serves as both backdrop and destination.

The game places players in familiar territory at the Horizon Festival, where an aspiring driver works through a growing slate of competitive events spread across the country. Progress comes through earning points in races and challenges, unlocking additional competitions and expanding access to the wider festival circuit.

That structure remains open-ended. Players can lean into the activities they enjoy most, whether that means drag races, dirt tracks, or stunt-focused events built around ramps and difficult terrain. Advancement is tied more to participation than strict completion, allowing for a looser rhythm than a traditional career mode.

What stands out more sharply this time is the setting itself. Horizon 6 presents its version of Japan as the largest environment the series has used so far, but size alone is not what gives the map its character. The game shifts noticeably from one region to another, moving from dense urban streets lit by Tokyo’s neon glow to colder, quieter roads near Mount Fuji.

That variety changes the pace of play. Long stretches of driving between events no longer feel like downtime in the same way they sometimes did in earlier Horizon games. Exploration becomes part of the experience rather than a break from it.

For some players, that may ultimately overshadow the competitive side altogether. The game still frames itself around climbing the ranks at the Horizon Festival, but its strongest moments appear to come during unstructured drives across the countryside, where music, scenery, and movement take priority over finishing positions.

The sense of freedom has long been central to the Horizon formula, though Horizon 6 seems more willing to let players ignore the pressure of progression entirely. Roads branch outward in every direction, and the game rarely insists on a particular route or activity for very long.

That flexibility is reinforced by the map design. Japan’s changing landscapes give even routine drives a distinct feel, whether weaving through crowded city streets or moving along icy mountain roads. The result is a racing game that often behaves more like a road trip.

For players spending hours simply exploring, the appeal may come less from competition than atmosphere. Horizon 6 still offers the structure of a racing festival, but much of its identity appears tied to the quieter experience of driving without urgency, discovering new roads one stretch at a time.
