Recent leaks suggest Samsung’s next Ultra model may adopt LPDDR6 RAM, a newer memory standard that has yet to appear in mainstream smartphones. If accurate, this would place the device ahead of much of the current market, where LPDDR5X remains the dominant choice in high-end models.

The move is notable less for headline appeal and more for what it could mean in day-to-day use. LPDDR6 is expected to deliver higher bandwidth alongside improved efficiency, with changes to memory channel structure playing a role. In practical terms, that could translate into smoother multitasking and quicker responsiveness when switching between demanding apps. Gains may also be felt in areas such as mobile gaming and on-device AI processing, though how noticeable those improvements are to users remains to be seen.

The memory upgrade is said to be paired with Qualcomm’s next-generation chipset, reportedly the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. According to the same set of leaks, Qualcomm is preparing two versions of this processor, with the Pro variant positioned as the more capable option.

That higher-end chip is expected to feature an upgraded Adreno 850 GPU with 18MB of GMEM, compared to an Adreno 845 GPU with 12MB GMEM in the standard version. Both versions are believed to follow a 2+3+3 CPU configuration and could be built on TSMC’s 2nm process, a step that typically brings efficiency improvements alongside raw performance gains.

Samsung’s in-house silicon efforts are continuing in parallel, with development reportedly underway on the Exynos 2700 and Exynos 2800. Even so, early indications suggest the Ultra model will rely on Qualcomm hardware in most markets, consistent with recent strategy.

There is, however, a cost dimension to these upgrades. Transitioning to a newer memory standard and more advanced chip design often carries a price premium. With DRAM and storage costs already on an upward trend, any shift in component pricing could influence the final retail positioning of the device.

At this stage, the details remain preliminary. Much can change before the product reaches the market, and timelines or specifications may shift as development progresses. Still, the early picture points to a device that could push several hardware boundaries at once, even if the real-world impact will only become clear closer to launch.
