George Russell won the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday at the Red Bull Ring, finishing 1.611 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli in third.
The result tightens the title fight considerably. Antonelli now leads the Drivers’ Championship on 171 points. Russell, on 131, has cut the gap from 50 points down to 40 — the biggest swing of the season so far in a single race.
Russell Controls the Race from the Front
Starting from pole position, Russell made a clean getaway and held his lead through the opening laps. Verstappen — who had crashed out during qualifying and started lower down the grid — climbed through the pack and eventually applied real pressure in the closing stages. He couldn’t find a way past, though. Russell held firm to take his seventh career win and his second of the 2026 season.
Antonelli had a rougher afternoon. The Italian ran wide on multiple occasions early in the race and never had the pace to challenge the top two. Third was the safe outcome for the championship leader, but it cost him ground in the standings.
How the Championship Standings Look Now
Before Sunday, Antonelli had a 50-point buffer over Russell. That cushion is now 40. Russell also moved ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who sits third on 125 points — just six behind Russell after not scoring as well this weekend.
Three drivers within 46 points of each other with races still to run. That is what the 2026 F1 title fight looks like tonight.
What Comes Next in the Season
The Austrian race showed that Mercedes has the pace to challenge on different track types. If Russell can carry that form into the next few rounds, the gap to Antonelli could shrink further before the summer break. Antonelli, still only 18, has handled pressure well all season — but Sunday’s third place suggests the margin for error is getting smaller.
Verstappen’s second place also keeps him in the conversation, though he needs a strong run of results to get back into realistic title contention.
Antonelli leads on 171 points, Russell is 40 behind in second, and Hamilton trails by 46 — the championship is still wide open.
