GoPro’s Mission 1 Pro ILS is putting a different kind of camera in the spotlight. The company’s new model keeps the small, rugged shape associated with GoPro while adding an interchangeable-lens mount. GoPro opened preorders on August 26 and said retail availability would begin in September.

The camera uses a 50-megapixel one-inch sensor and can record up to 8K at 60 frames per second. It also supports Open Gate capture, which records a taller frame that can be reframed for different platforms. That option will appeal to creators who want one recording for a horizontal video, a vertical clip and a cropped social edit.

The major change is the Micro Four Thirds mount. It gives users access to a wider lens system than a fixed-lens action camera. The body weighs 197 grams, so the camera remains easy to carry on a small rig or handheld setup. GoPro also offers the Mission Monitor app for remote viewing and control.

A small body still brings compromises. TechRadar’s review found that the camera is weatherproof, but not waterproof. It also reported manual focus and the absence of subject tracking and horizon lock. Those limits matter for action shooters who expect the camera to correct movement or keep a subject locked without extra setup.

Battery life depends on the recording mode. TechRadar reported up to 96 minutes using an 8K 4:3 setting in its testing. High-resolution recording also creates larger files and puts more pressure on storage, cooling and batteries. Users planning a full-day shoot will need spare power and a workflow for moving footage.

The Mission 1 Pro ILS is best understood as a compact camera for people willing to make a few manual choices. Its lens mount and Open Gate mode widen the creative options. Its missing tracking and horizon features make it less automatic than a typical action camera. That balance, rather than the headline resolution alone, will decide whether it fits a creator’s kit.
