India Women are out of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup after Australia chased down their 170-run target in 19 overs at Lord’s on Sunday, winning by six wickets and ending India’s tournament hopes despite the team having won three of their five group-stage games.

Harmanpreet Kaur scored 56 for India, giving them a competitive total. Australia’s response was clinical. Ellyse Perry made 56 and Ashleigh Gardner finished 53 not out as Australia sealed the chase with an over to spare. India needed a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive, and they didn’t get it.
India’s Group Stage Summary
Three wins from five games is not a bad group stage record by most standards. But the Women’s T20 World Cup only advances the top two teams from each group, and India’s two losses — including this one to Australia — were the ones that counted. The qualification structure is unforgiving at this level, and India couldn’t recover from their earlier slip-up in the group.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s 56 showed that India’s batting wasn’t the problem in isolation. A total of 170 on any other day at Lord’s might have been enough. Against Australia’s top order in form, it wasn’t.
Australia’s Chase and Gardner’s Role
Australia sent out their top order with intent and Perry’s half-century up front gave them the foundation they needed. Gardner came in and took the game away in the middle overs. Her unbeaten 53 off relatively few deliveries removed any suspense from the chase. India’s bowling applied pressure at moments, but Australia never looked like losing their momentum.
Shree Charani took 2 for 32 for India, the best bowling figures in the match. It wasn’t enough. Australia reached the target with six wickets in hand and seven balls remaining.
The Bigger Picture for Indian Women’s Cricket
India Women have been strong in bilateral series and shorter tournaments over the past two years, but have struggled to convert group-stage form into knockout runs at major ICC events. The 2026 T20 World Cup exit at the group stage reopens familiar questions about whether the squad depth and tactical flexibility match up against Australia, England, and the top Southern Hemisphere sides at tournament pressure.
The next major ICC event for India Women is the 2027 Women’s ODI World Cup, giving the squad a full year to address what went wrong here.
India Women are eliminated from the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup — three wins were not enough, and Australia’s clinical chase at Lord’s ended the campaign.
FYI (keeping you in the loop)
What happens next in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026?
With India eliminated, the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 proceeds without them. Australia advance from Group 1 along with the other qualifier. The semi-finals and final will be held in the UK in July 2026. The West Indies, England, New Zealand, and South Africa are among the other teams in contention for the title.
