That would keep the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at the same starting capacity as the iPhone 17 Pro models. Apple has not confirmed the storage options, prices or specifications.

The reported capacity follows a big change from the previous generation. The iPhone 16 Pro started at 128GB, while Apple moved the iPhone 17 Pro to 256GB. If the latest report is accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro would hold that higher baseline for another year instead of adding more space at the entry level.

More storage is not always the best response to a rising component bill. TrendForce says memory costs have increased sharply as demand from artificial-intelligence data centers competes for supply. Its research estimates that memory represented a much larger share of the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro’s bill of materials than it did a year earlier. Those figures describe production estimates, not a final Apple cost sheet.

The storage decision could affect the price conversation. MacRumors reports that TrendForce considers price increases likely for the iPhone 18 Pro models because of higher memory, storage and processor costs. Other reports have published possible starting prices, but Apple has not released an official number. A 256GB phone could therefore cost more even without offering more capacity.

For buyers, the starting storage tier is more than a number on a specification table. Modern phones keep high-resolution photos, long video clips, downloaded games and offline media on the device. Users who shoot a lot of video or keep several large games installed may reach 256GB faster than people who stream most of their content and use cloud storage.

Apple’s reported choice would also make the comparison with the 512GB and 1TB versions more important. Customers who want extra space could still have those options, but the price difference has not been published. A higher base price may push some buyers toward financing, an older Pro model or a lower storage configuration with more dependence on cloud services.

The capacity report should not be confused with a confirmed launch announcement. Apple has scheduled its September 9 event, and MacRumors expects the iPhone 18 Pro models to appear there. The iPhone 18 Pro 256GB storage story is therefore about a possible hold in capacity during an unusually expensive memory cycle.
