iPhone 18 Pro keeps a SIM tray in most markets while others go eSIM-only

Apple is continuing its gradual move away from physical SIM cards, but the iPhone 18 Pro eSIM policy will vary by market. MacRumors reports that the Pro models will be eSIM-only in 12 countries and regions, while physical SIM support remains in many other markets.

The eSIM-only list includes Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The list matches the countries where the previous iPhone 17 Pro models used the same approach.

Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will still include a nano-SIM tray in other countries. That includes the United Kingdom, most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea. China will have several SIM combinations depending on the model and market.

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone. It lets users activate a mobile plan without inserting a card. Apple says an eSIM-only design can also make a lost or stolen phone harder to disconnect from a carrier because there is no removable card.

The design can change the buying decision for travelers. A customer who moves between countries will need to check the exact regional model before purchase. Carrier activation support also matters because not every operator handles eSIM setup in the same way.

Apple says the eSIM-only versions have a larger battery because the space used by the SIM tray can be filled with other components. MacRumors noted that the official battery figures currently published for the Pro phones apply to models that still have a physical tray.

Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro for preorder on September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time. Availability begins September 18. The new iPhone Duo takes the policy further because Apple describes that device as eSIM-only worldwide.

For buyers, the change is less about a new feature than about regional compatibility. Checking the country version, carrier support and travel needs before ordering will prevent a phone from arriving with a SIM setup that does not match the buyer’s plan.
