Apple’s iPhone Duo is not simply an iPhone 18 Pro that folds in half. MacRumors’ comparison of the two new phones lists ten Pro features that do not appear on the foldable, including a dedicated telephoto camera, variable aperture and Face ID. The difference gives the Duo a separate identity, but it also makes the buying decision more complicated.
The foldable uses a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with optical-quality 2x zoom instead of the iPhone 18 Pro’s dedicated telephoto system. MacRumors also says the Duo does not include the Pro camera controls, ProRAW, ProRes RAW, spatial capture or LiDAR. Its front Center Stage camera is 12 megapixels, while the Pro models use an 18-megapixel version. Touch ID replaces Face ID, and the Action button is absent.
Apple’s product announcement presents the Duo around its two-screen design, a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. The company says the foldable opens new options for viewing, gaming and multitasking. The iPhone 18 Pro announcement, by contrast, emphasizes the A20 Pro chip, camera hardware, Dynamic Island and sustained performance. Those official descriptions support the idea that the phones target different priorities.
For buyers, the missing features are more useful as a checklist than as a verdict. A photographer who needs long optical reach or ProRAW may prefer the 18 Pro. Someone who values a larger canvas in a pocketable device may accept the simpler camera system. The Duo still brings its own capabilities, including a continuous foldable display, Touch ID and a layout designed for two screen sizes.
The comparison does not show that the Duo will take poor pictures or that Touch ID is less secure. It shows only which features Apple lists for one model and not the other. Real-world camera quality, hinge durability and battery performance will require independent testing after launch. Apple has also not said that every software feature will remain permanently exclusive to one model.
Apple is scheduled to open iPhone Duo preorders on October 16 before a release on October 23, according to the current report. Until reviews arrive, the clearest takeaway is simple: the foldable is a design-led iPhone, while the 18 Pro remains the camera and performance-led choice. The two products share the iPhone name but are not interchangeable on paper.
