The recent online leak of Jana Nayagan has drawn a sharp response from the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association, which has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging stronger enforcement against piracy networks that continue to operate despite existing restrictions.

In a letter dated April 11, the association raised concerns about the persistence of illegal distribution channels, arguing that platforms known for hosting pirated content remain accessible. Anil Nagrath, secretary of the body, pointed to Telegram groups, torrent sites and portals such as Tamilrockers as examples of systems that have not been effectively dismantled.
He questioned the uneven application of digital bans, noting that while certain categories of websites have been blocked in the past, similar action has not fully extended to piracy networks. For producers, he suggested, this gap has real financial consequences and undermines the broader ecosystem of film production.
The association also linked the leak to delays in the certification process. According to Nagrath, the film had been unable to meet its scheduled release date of January 9 as it remained under review with the Central Board of Film Certification. The project was referred to a Revising Committee, prolonging its clearance.
He said the absence of the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal, which was shut down by the government, has left producers with limited recourse when certification disputes arise. During this period of uncertainty, scenes from the film surfaced online, raising concerns about how content under official custody could be exposed.
While stopping short of making direct allegations, Nagrath indicated that the sequence of events has deepened anxiety within the industry about both procedural delays and content security. He called for accountability and legal action against those responsible for the leak.
The links carrying the leaked footage have since been removed, though the incident has already unsettled filmmakers. Several prominent figures, including Chiranjeevi, Sivakarthikeyan, Suriya and others, publicly voiced support for the makers and condemned piracy.
Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan features Vijay in a political thriller role alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju. The film remains pending certification, its release timeline uncertain for now, even as the industry grapples with the fallout of the leak.
