Vijay’s much-delayed film *Jana Nayagan* is likely to receive its censor certificate this weekend after the Revising Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification cleared the film, according to sources familiar with the process.

The development marks a significant step forward for the production, which has remained in limbo for months despite initially completing the censor review process in late 2025. Producers are now awaiting the formal issuance of the certificate before announcing a release date.
The film had originally been reviewed by the CBFC’s Examining Committee in December 2025. At the time, the committee reportedly suggested certain cuts, which the makers said were implemented. Following that process, the film was expected to release on January 9, 2026.
The certification process, however, took an unexpected turn after one member of the Examining Committee reportedly raised objections to some scenes in the film and wrote to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi. The matter was then referred to the Revising Committee for a fresh review, delaying the issuance of the certificate.
In the intervening months, the makers approached both the Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court seeking relief over the delay in certification. Sources also indicated that the certificate was not issued earlier because of the Model Code of Conduct.
The film has attracted unusual public and political attention because it features sitting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay in the lead role. That circumstance has made *Jana Nayagan* one of the most closely watched Tamil releases in recent years.
Speaking to NDTV earlier, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions said the team had been waiting for the CBFC’s final approval before moving ahead with the theatrical release.
“We are awaiting the certificate from the CBFC. Once they give their final nod, we will immediately take it to the theatres,” he said.
Venkat also described how Vijay’s political rise changed the way audiences now view the film and its title. He said fans had even requested that the title card identify Vijay as the “Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu” instead of “Thalapathy Vijay.”
“When we started the movie, we didn’t know that we would have to go through all this,” he said, adding that the delay had coincided with Vijay becoming Chief Minister.
According to the producer, the examining committee had initially informed the team that the film would receive a U/A 16+ certification. But instead of the certificate, the makers later received an email stating that a complaint had been lodged against the film and that the matter would go before the Revising Committee.
Venkat said the producers questioned how objections could arise before the film’s release and argued in court that the CBFC remained the final authority on certification matters. He further stated that the complaint had come from a member of the Examining Committee who had earlier consented during the review process.
Since then, the producers have been waiting for the revising process to conclude while completing the required formalities for release. With the latest clearance now reportedly in place, attention has shifted to when the makers will formally announce the film’s theatrical rollout.
