Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, bringing the next chapter of the adventure franchise to theaters on December 25, 2026. The film reunites Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan for a story that turns the series’ familiar rules upside down.
The Jumanji: Open World trailer follows the cliffhanger from Jumanji: The Next Level, in which creatures from the game began crossing into the real world. This time, the danger is wider: the game’s animals, landscapes and challenges are no longer contained by the digital world, while the avatars played by Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan are also outside the game and operating in what the trailer describes as demo mode.
That shift moves the new film closer to the premise of the 1995 original, in which a mysterious board game unleashed its threats on an ordinary town. The latest story still keeps the modern reboot series’ video-game setting, but the trailer suggests that the characters will have to manage the consequences in everyday surroundings before returning to the game to restore order.
Jake Kasdan, who directed the previous two reboot films, returns behind the camera. The returning ensemble also includes Nick Jonas and Awkwafina, along with Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Madison Iseman and Ser’Darius Blain. The film’s central cast again plays the larger-than-life avatars, giving the sequel a familiar group dynamic while introducing a new problem for them to solve.
The new film is being promoted as the concluding chapter of the modern trilogy that began with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017. TheWrap reported that the first reboot earned about $962 million worldwide, while The Next Level followed with roughly $801.6 million. Those earlier releases established the franchise as a major holiday draw and raised expectations for the new film’s return.
Jumanji: Open World is scheduled for a Christmas Day theatrical release. Its holiday launch places the film in a crowded period for major releases, but the returning stars, the new real-world premise and the promise of one more game give Sony a clear hook for audiences already searching for the trailer.
