NASA says the August event will be a partial eclipse rather than a total eclipse. During the maximum phase, most of the Moon will pass through Earth’s dark inner shadow, but a small portion will remain outside it. Exact visibility depends on the observer’s location and local time.
The Associated Press described the event as a near-total or deep partial eclipse and said the Americas would have the best opportunity to see it. The Moon can take on a dark red or copper colour in the part that enters the shadow, although clouds and local horizon conditions will determine what viewers actually see.
NASA’s 2026 eclipse calendar also records the timing of the partial lunar eclipse in Universal Time. Converting those times to a city requires attention to the local date, because the event may begin on one calendar day and reach its peak after midnight in another time zone.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse can be viewed without special eye protection. Binoculars or a small telescope may make the shadow edge easier to see, but the basic requirement is a clear view of the night sky.
