A routine early-overs moment at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi turned unsettling on Saturday when Lungi Ngidi suffered a heavy fall while attempting a catch, forcing play to halt and medical staff to intervene urgently.

The incident occurred in the third over of the fixture between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. Chasing a miscue from Priyansh Arya off Axar Patel’s bowling, Ngidi tracked the ball while moving backward from mid-off. He stretched in an effort to complete the catch but failed to get his hands to it cleanly. In the process, he lost balance and fell awkwardly, striking the back of his head hard on the ground.

Players from both sides immediately signalled for assistance as Ngidi remained on the turf, clutching his head. The seriousness of the situation became apparent as the game paused for an extended period, with physios attending to him on the field.

What followed was a tense and quiet stretch inside the stadium. A stretcher was brought out, and shortly after, an ambulance was summoned onto the playing area. Team members and officials watched closely as medical personnel carefully secured Ngidi and transported him off the field for further evaluation.

Initial concerns centred around the visible impact and his immediate reaction. The South African pacer reportedly complained of a headache and neck pain following the fall, prompting the decision to take him to hospital for scans rather than continue observation at the ground.

Roughly an hour and a half later, the IPL issued an official update, confirming that Ngidi was in stable condition and expected to be discharged soon. The statement offered some relief after what had been a distressing episode for players and spectators alike.

The match resumed after the interruption, though the mood had shifted. Incidents of this nature, even when outcomes are reassuring, tend to linger beyond the boundary ropes, reminding those involved of the physical risks that remain part of the sport.
