A busy morning unfolded on the campus of Dhaka University as former German international footballer Mesut Ozil arrived to open the newly renovated Shaheed Buddhijibi Mortuza Medical Centre, refurbished with Turkish assistance to expand healthcare support for students and staff.

The midfielder, widely known for spells at Real Madrid and Arsenal and for representing the Germany national football team, was welcomed by university authorities before touring the upgraded facility. He spent time inside consultation rooms and service areas where officials described improvements aimed at strengthening on-campus treatment capacity.
Students gathered early near the medical centre and surrounding walkways, many waiting behind informal lines for a brief view. Some managed quick greetings and photographs as the footballer moved between the building and the event area.
University Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan handed him a commemorative gift during the ceremony attended by diplomats and guests including Turkish Ambassador Ramis Sen and Bilal Erdoğan, son of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Speaking briefly at the programme, Bilal Erdoğan said the footballer would later travel to Cox’s Bazar to play football with Rohingya children, describing it as part of ongoing humanitarian engagement involving Turkish organisations.
The renovation work was supported by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency. Its President Abdullah Eren was also present, alongside senior university officials and representatives of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

Officials said the upgraded facility is expected to improve access to essential medical services within the campus premises. For many students gathered outside the building, the morning blended routine university life with a rare encounter, before the campus gradually returned to its usual rhythm.
