Michelle Obama’s appearance at a Martha’s Vineyard author event has drawn fresh attention to the former first lady’s fashion choices and her discussion of clothing, according to local reporting. The Vineyard Gazette said Obama spoke twice on Aug. 23 at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center with journalist Michele Norris as part of the island’s author series.
The Gazette reported that Obama wore a blue-and-white striped dress and heeled sandals for the talks. Jang News separately reported that the dress was a Carolina Herrera design from the pre-fall 2026 collection and gave a retail price of $2,390. The reports described the clothing in connection with a public book appearance, rather than as an announcement about a new fashion collection.
Obama’s new book, The Look, was central to the event. The Vineyard Gazette said the large-format book contains more than 200 photographs and examines clothing choices made during her time in the White House. During the conversation, she discussed the intense media attention directed at her clothing and body while Barack Obama was campaigning and serving as president.
The local newspaper also reported that Obama became the first first lady to employ a personal stylist. Meredith Koop, who had worked in a staff role, helped develop the clothing choices for official travel, state visits and other public appearances. Obama described dressing as a job in itself and said her substantive priorities included nutrition, education and other issues.
The event included a design-focused element. The Gazette said Obama and Norris asked young designers from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s art and technology programme to stand for applause. It also reported that attendees received a copy of The Look and passed through security checks before entering the venue.
The two reports place the dress within a broader conversation about American designers and the public expectations placed on women in political life. They do not establish a separate endorsement, product partnership or official fashion announcement. The island appearance was described as the finale of the biennial Martha’s Vineyard Author Series, which alternates with the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival.
