MSI showed off its latest gaming handheld at COMPUTEX 2026 in June. The Claw 8 EX AI+ is the first gaming device powered by Intel’s new Arc G3 Extreme processor. The screen is 9 inches. The price is expected to be around $1,499.
For context: the Steam Deck costs $549. The original Claw was $699. This new model sits in the high-end handheld market, competing against the ROG Ally and upcoming devices from GPD and Acer.
Intel built the Arc G3 specifically for handheld gaming. Not adapted from desktop silicon. Designed from scratch to handle 1080p gaming on a small device while managing heat and battery life. The Claw 8 EX AI+ is the first real-world test of whether that approach works.
The screen is the standout hardware feature. 9 inches is larger than competitors. IPS panel with 1920×1200 resolution. Variable refresh rate between 48 and 120 Hz. 100% sRGB color coverage. 500 nits brightness for outdoor visibility. This is a premium display for a handheld.
MSI redesigned the ergonomics too. Hall-effect triggers and thumbsticks, meaning no mechanical wear over time. The D-pad is supposedly more responsive. A new linear motor delivers haptic feedback that actually feels precise.
These details matter. Handheld gaming is brutal on hardware. Thumbsticks wear out. Buttons get stuck. A device at this price needs to survive actual gameplay hours.
The real test is performance. Can Intel’s Arc G3 deliver? Can it run modern games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Alan Wake 2 at acceptable frame rates? Early reports from COMPUTEX were positive. But real-world battery life and sustained performance under load matter more than benchmarks.
Pricing is aggressive. A $1,499 handheld is expensive. Most people don’t spend that much. But enthusiasts will. The people who already own a Steam Deck and want something more powerful. The people who travel constantly and want serious gaming power in their pocket.
MSI’s advantage is ecosystem. The company makes gaming laptops and desktops. They have retail relationships. They understand the gaming market. This isn’t a tech startup trying to disrupt. It’s a manufacturer bringing production discipline to a niche market.
Intel needs this win. Arc has struggled to gain traction. Bad drivers. Weak performance against NVIDIA‘s GeForce. But in a handheld, Intel’s efficiency matters more than raw power. Arc G3 could find success here even if it fails in desktops.
The Claw 8 EX AI+ launches late June. Preorders likely opened recently. Early adoption will determine if this becomes a real competitor or a niche product for Intel faithful.
The handheld gaming market is splitting. Budget tier stays with Steam Deck. Premium tier goes here. Between those extremes is crowded and confusing. MSI’s job is to prove this device deserves its price.
