Mumbai Vada Pav Hygiene Changes Target Newspaper Food Wrapping

By Soniya ChowdhuryAugust 22, 20262 Mins Read

Mumbai’s food-safety enforcement has focused on the use of newspaper to wrap or serve vada pav and other food items. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation warned vendors to stop the practice after concerns about ink transferring to food.

A June press release from the Press Information Bureau said newspaper used with oily food can allow printing inks and other contaminants to migrate into the food. The notice directed food businesses to use food-grade packaging instead of newspaper for serving or absorbing oil.

The Indian Express reported that 55 establishments were inspected during a Mumbai enforcement drive and 26 were found using newspaper. The report said action was taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, showing that the change involves vendor compliance rather than a ban on vada pav itself.

The rule applies to the material used to package or serve the snack. Vendors can continue selling vada pav when they comply with food-safety requirements and use suitable food-contact packaging. Customers should not read the newspaper restriction as an order to remove the dish from menus.

Further food-related enforcement has also affected school canteens. Hindustan Times reported that schools were removing items high in fat, salt and sugar under a Food and Drug Administration order, with vada pav among the foods discussed in that context.

The current Mumbai vada pav hygiene changes are therefore about safer serving materials and broader food compliance. The official warning, inspections and later school-canteen action point to packaging and nutrition standards, not the end of Mumbai’s vada pav trade.
