The Pima County sheriff’s department has acknowledged that human remains found near Nancy Guthrie’s home have not brought investigators closer to identifying who may be responsible for her disappearance. The department’s statement was issued after the remains became part of renewed public attention around the case.

Guthrie, 84, is the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. She was last confirmed at her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills on Jan. 31, according to Arizona reporting. Investigators have continued searching for her while reviewing tips, physical evidence and information provided to authorities.
AZFamily reported earlier this month that Sheriff Chris Nanos described the investigation as active. The report said thousands of tips were still being worked and laboratories around the country were involved in examining DNA evidence. Those details show that the case remains open, but they do not establish a suspect or confirm what happened to Guthrie.
The case has also produced ransom notes and other claims that investigators have had to assess. The Associated Press previously reported that the FBI discounted some notes as extortion attempts while continuing to evaluate others. Authorities have not publicly confirmed that any ransom message establishes Guthrie’s location or fate.
The latest statement leaves the central questions unresolved: where Guthrie is, who may have taken her and what evidence can be tied directly to the disappearance. Investigators continue to ask that information be sent through official law-enforcement channels rather than through independent searches or online speculation.
