Rivian R2 Ramps Production, Eyes 150,000 Units Annually

By Soniya ChowdhuryJuly 30, 20262 Mins Read

Rivian began first customer deliveries of the R2 on June 9 and is ramping production through July. The midsize electric SUV is priced aggressively, starting at $45,000 for the base model.

The R2 is Rivian’s answer to Tesla Model Y. It’s smaller, less expensive, and aimed at the mass market. After years of losses and capital burns, Rivian is betting the R2 will finally drive profitability.

The Pricing Ladder

R2 Standard starts at $45,000, arriving in late 2027. R2 Premium at $53,990 with 450 horsepower and 330-mile range arrives in late 2026. R2 Performance Launch at $57,990 offers 656 horsepower and 3.6-second 0-60 time, available this spring.

These prices undercut Tesla across the board. Rivian is competing on value, not specs alone.

Production Capacity

Rivian expects to sell 20,000-25,000 R2s in the first year from its Normal, Illinois plant. A second factory in Georgia comes online in 2028, targeting 150,000 annual units across the R2 lineup.

That’s an aggressive ramp. It requires flawless execution, supply chain stability, and sustained demand.

Tesla Supercharger Access

The R2 can connect to Tesla’s Supercharger network, easing charging anxiety. This partnership is crucial for buyers unfamiliar with Rivian’s charging infrastructure. Access to proven networks reduces purchase friction.

The R2 is Rivian’s inflection point. If it succeeds, Rivian survives. If it stumbles, the company’s future gets very difficult.
