Lucy Davis, who played Dawn Tinsley in the original British version of The Office, has revealed she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer roughly 18 months ago.

The cancer has spread to her spine, right hip and ribs, Davis said, describing the diagnosis as incurable and now too advanced for chemotherapy, according to interviews reported by The Hollywood Reporter and NBC News.

Davis starred across all three seasons of the UK version of The Office, where her character Dawn shared a slow-building romance with Martin Freeman’s Tim Canterbury, a storyline that became one of the show’s most quoted arcs. The series, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, ran from 2001 to 2003 and later served as the basis for the long-running American adaptation.

Davis said she intends to keep working as long as she is able, calling acting one of the biggest joys in her life. She said she is trying to live out whatever time she has left in as fulfilling a way as possible, according to Fox News.

Her diagnosis is separate from that of Jenna Fischer, who played Pam Beesly in NBC’s American version of The Office. Fischer revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and has since said she is cancer-free following treatment.

News of Davis’s diagnosis spread quickly among fans of the original series this week, with many sharing messages of support online since the interviews were published.

Davis has continued to work in British television and film since The Office ended in 2003, including a role in the 2004 horror comedy Shaun of the Dead. She has not announced any upcoming projects since disclosing her diagnosis.

Representatives for Davis have not said whether she plans to share further updates on her treatment or condition in the coming months.
