The toxic movie trailer search is now linked to a separate debate over the film’s portrayal of women, intimate imagery and the response from lead actor Yash. The film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on Aug. 26.
The trailer and promotional material have drawn criticism from some viewers and actors who questioned the way female characters and intimate scenes were presented. The Indian Express reported that Kannada actor Rishika Singh criticised the trailer and questioned whether the promotion placed too much emphasis on male ego while giving women less presence.
Yash addressed the criticism in an interview on India TV’s Aap Ki Adalat, according to The Indian Express. He said vulgarity was wrong, discussed freedom of expression and described the film as being aimed at Gen Z. He also said he had not even kissed in the film, responding directly to the debate around the promotional material.
The criticism and the response concern the trailer and the way the film has been marketed, not a completed review of the movie itself. Toxic has been directed by Geetu Mohandas and features Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth and Tara Sutaria among its announced cast.
NDTV reported that Rishika Singh’s criticism focused on intimate scenes in the trailer and that the film had faced controversy over its romantic and sexual imagery. The report also noted that the movie includes five female actors. The production’s final treatment of those characters will be seen only when the film reaches theatres.
With the Aug. 26 release approaching, the toxic movie trailer conversation has moved beyond action footage and release-date interest to questions about representation and the filmmaker’s intended tone. The current reports establish the criticism and Yash’s answer, but not the finished film’s critical or audience response.
