USS Abraham Lincoln deployment draws new scrutiny over sailor conditions

By Soniya ChowdhuryAugust 20, 20262 Mins Read

The USS Lincoln food water shortages search trend reflects growing public attention on the aircraft carrier’s unusually long deployment and reports from families about the strain on sailors serving at sea.

Axios reported that the San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln was nearing nine months of deployment, including more than 240 days without a normal port call. The carrier has more than 5,000 sailors, and family members told the outlet they were worried about exhaustion, food supplies and the effect of the deployment on safety.

The concerns are reports and allegations from families and other sources, not a finding that every sailor faced the same conditions. The Navy and senior officials have pushed back on some descriptions of life aboard the carrier.

The Associated Press separately reported that the destroyer USS Benfold lost power for four days in July. Its crew went without drinking water, meals, functioning toilets and air conditioning during the breakdown, according to the report. Lawmakers said the incident added to calls for investigations into conditions aboard the Lincoln.

The Lincoln has been supporting U.S. operations connected to the Iran conflict. AP reported earlier that officials were preparing another aircraft carrier to move toward the Middle East as the Navy planned a rotation.

The combination of the record-setting time at sea, family complaints and congressional scrutiny has kept attention on the deployment. Public accounts remain contested, and official Navy statements are part of the continuing discussion about the crew’s conditions and relief plans.
