The on-screen chemistry between Vijayta Pandit and Kumar Gaurav in the 1981 film Love Story left a lasting impression on audiences. Decades later, Pandit has spoken candidly about how that connection extended beyond the script, shaping a personal chapter that unfolded under public and family scrutiny.

In a past interview with Lehren Retro, Pandit described how their relationship developed quietly during the film’s production. She recalled that their growing closeness did not go unnoticed, particularly by Gaurav’s father, Rajendra Kumar, who was openly opposed to the match.

According to her account, Rajendra Kumar expressed concern about the timing and its potential impact on his son’s career. Pandit said she often overheard conversations where he discouraged the relationship and spoke of arranging a more suitable alliance. The tension left her unsettled, even as the bond between the two young actors deepened.

Despite the resistance, Pandit said their feelings remained unchanged. She described it as her first experience of love, one that felt instinctive and difficult to step away from. While the film gained widespread success and established Gaurav as a leading face, their personal situation grew increasingly strained.

Pandit also spoke about a turning point that came when Gaurav became engaged to Reema Kapoor, daughter of Raj Kapoor. She attended the engagement ceremony, recalling the moment as both cordial and quietly unsettling. A remark she made about the engagement ring, she said, drew an unexpectedly sharp response from Gaurav.

She further claimed that, even after the engagement, Gaurav continued to meet her and reassured her of his intentions. Pandit recounted a conversation involving her mother, where he acknowledged the engagement but insisted he would ultimately marry her instead. She added that he had made the promise with visible conviction.

Pandit also mentioned that others in their circle were aware of the depth of their relationship. She recalled Reena Roy as having acknowledged the closeness between the two.

The relationship, however, did not reach the conclusion either had once spoken of. Pandit’s reflections offer a glimpse into a period where personal choices, family expectations, and a rapidly rising film career intersected in complicated ways, leaving behind a story that still draws attention years later.
